Queensland marks Australia Day every year on Friday, 26 January as an occasion for national pride and celebration. Communities come together from Brisbane to smaller towns to recognise Australia’s rich culture and history and to celebrate Australia Day’s rich traditions and culture with outdoor events, barbeques, concerts, and community festivals all over Queensland on this national holiday, showcasing our vibrant national identity and spirit. It is also an opportunity for reflection on past achievements, aspirations, goals, and national symbols such as flags and other national icons displayed across Queensland on Australia Day.
Labour Day will take place on Monday, 11 March 2024 and marks a significant achievement of Australian labour movement history: the eight-hour workday. Queensland often take advantage of this public holiday to recognise and thank workers’ contributions to our nation; outdoor activities, community events, and parades often mark this eventful celebration while enjoying the last few moments of summer with family and friends in parks or beaches.
Good Friday 2024 will be observed by many Christians across Queensland as it commemorates Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and burial. A day for solemn reflection and religious ceremonies, many attend church services on Good Friday as it marks Easter weekend family gatherings. Brisbane hosts the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race on Good Friday Appeal to raise funds for Royal Children’s Hospital through various community initiatives.
ANZAC Day will take place on Thursday, 25 April 2024 and marks a solemn day of commemoration across Victoria to remember and pay our respects to those who served and sacrificed during World War One, including dawn services, wreath-laying ceremonies, and commemorative marches at venues such as Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance. Dawn services, wreath-laying ceremonies, and commemorative marches take place all across Victoria as we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend freedom throughout wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations over many years of conflict. Our tribute goes out to them all on this important day of rememberance!
Additional Information
In Queensland, Public Holidays can basically be divided into three groups:
Public Holidays – Statewide
Show Holidays
Other Holidays
Statewide
These are the holidays that we all know and love such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day, King’s Birthday, Labour Day and so on. These holidays are generally held on the same day throughout Queensland.
Show Holidays
Most regions of Queensland have access to some form of Show Holiday. These types of public holiday are much less regimented and the designated day off can change between regions for the same show. The Ekka Holiday (Royal Queensland Show) is a good example where Brisbane City have a different day off to the Gold Coast and even the Moreton Region. This allows the show organisers to avoid huge bottlenecks with everyone trying to attend the show on the same day.
There are a large number of smaller local show holidays throughout various regions of Qld.
Other Holidays
From time to time there are one off holidays added to our holiday calendar in special circumstances. For example, in 2023 there was a special New Year’s Day public holiday on the 2nd January because New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday.
